Building a Deck on Cedar Park Limestone

Much of Cedar Park sits on limestone close to the surface, so deck posts are often set into rock instead of deep soil.

Why the Rock Matters

In much of Cedar Park the soil over the rock is thin. Dig a post hole and you often reach layered limestone a short way down. Sound rock makes a strong base for a deck post. It does not shrink and swell the way some soils do, so posts set into it stay put.

Not every lot is the same. Some yards have deep fill from when the house was built. Some have loose, broken rock near the top that has to be dug past. We dig a test hole and look before we size the post bases, so the plan fits your ground and not a guess.

Call 811 Before Anyone Digs

Texas law says to notify the 811 center no earlier than the 14th day and no later than 48 hours before you dig, not counting weekends and legal holidays. The law counts it as excavation when powered equipment digs 16 inches or deeper. Deck and pergola post holes often go that deep, so the call comes first on every job.

Building Near Live Oaks

Big live oaks are part of why Cedar Park yards look the way they do. A deck can wrap around one. The trick is to keep posts clear of the main roots near the trunk, leave room for the trunk to grow and avoid cuts to the bark and limbs.

Oak wilt is a real risk here. The Texas Oak Wilt Partnership says to avoid pruning or wounding oaks from February 1st through June 30th. It counts damage from construction as a wound. If limbs must come off for a deck or cover, plan that work outside that window.

The Edwards Aquifer

Parts of Williamson, Travis and Hays counties sit over the Edwards Aquifer. TCEQ says building at private homes on the recharge or contributing zones falls under its Edwards Aquifer rules in 30 TAC Chapter 213. Whether your lot is in one of those zones depends on where it sits. Check with TCEQ or the city if you are not sure.

Questions

Is it harder to build a deck on rock?

The digging is harder and takes the right tools. The result is often a better base, since posts set into sound rock do not settle much.

Do I have to call 811 for a deck?

Texas law treats powered digging 16 inches or deeper as excavation and requires notice to the 811 center at least 48 hours before, not counting weekends and holidays. Deck post holes often go that deep.

When is it safe to trim oaks for a deck?

The Texas Oak Wilt Partnership says to avoid pruning or wounding oaks from February 1st through June 30th. Plan any limb work outside that window.
